Tables and Maps
U.S. Census Bureau: American Factfinder.

- Click on the Site Tour link on the left panel
for an overview of information that can be obtained from this site. This online
generation of tables focuses on "basic" demographic information.
- At this home page link, using the "Basic
Facts" interactions at the top of the page, one can create tables for
many census variables at various geographic levels, down to the city or town
level (place). It is possible to navigate to other pages on this site to produce
tables and maps all the way down to the place level.
- Comparison Tables show data for different levels
of geography, (e.g. counties) within a state. At the top panel "Show
Me", one needs to scroll down to comparison tables. This option will
drill down to the census track level for a county. Summary tables are produced
for printing or downloading.
- In the "Data Sets" panel, one can view
and download tables containing detailed census information all the way down
to the block level. See the accompanying information on "Downloading
Census Data for Local Area Analysis". These tables can be printed as
well as downloaded. Maps can be produced as well by selecting "Thematic
Maps" from the drop down menu once a data source is selected from the
main "Data Sets" panel.

Community Survey

- The American Community
Survey is an annual survey that is used to make statistical updates to the
decenial census and ask additional questions about the conditions of Americans.
This mode of data collection will replace the long form questionnaire in the
2010 census.
- If you choose Illilnois
(or annother state) from the "Quick Picks" panel on the right side
of the page, you can select various tables that give a profile of demographic
characteristics, social and economic conditions, and housing conditions for
Chicago and the few other counties that were selected in the sampling design
for a given year.

- Home page of the Illinois Census Bureau. From
the main page, Click on "IL Data". In the new page that opens up,
scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on "2000 Census profiles
are available" link. In the new page that opens up, we can get profiles
in pdf, csv formats of the general, social, economic & housing characteristics
at different geographic levels: state, counties, county/townships, cities
villages & towns, all townships within counties, metropolitan areas, congressional
districts. We can also get the summary of social, housing & economic characteristics
(the sf3 file information) in pdf and csv formats for the state, counties,
cities & villages over 10,000 population.
- Comparison tables 1990 – 2000. From the main page,
Click on "IL Data". In the new page that opens up, scroll down to
the bottom of the page, and Click on "Illinois Profile: Comparison of
1990 and 2000" link. We get a spreadsheet comparing the population, race,
and other housing characteristics.
- The main Illinois Census 2000 page has a power
point presentation link at the bottom of the page which displays some trends
in population changes for different races.
- Local Level Population Projections. On the left
of the main page, there is a link to "Population Projection". By
clicking it, one will go to a new page which has the user interface for providing
population projection till 2020. One can produce tables and obtain population
projections for specific cities, counties.

- An alternative site for downloading 1980, 1990
and 2000 census data. Click on Public - Census Data.
- Site also contains .pdf map files for Illinois
places. These are boundary maps for display. From the Census Data page, in
the right panel navigate to plmap; then select the boundaries demarcated pl_blk
for blocks, pl_trt for tracks, and pl_vtd for voting districts; then select
the state (Illinois) and then the county. A .pdf file will be displayed and
can be downloaded and saved. This file can be used for a report but not for
further analysis.

- This faculty project based at Northern Illinois University, Sociology Quantitative Research Laboratory has some limited, but growing, resources describing and explaining the quality of life primarily in the suburban area surrounding Chicago. The site contains some census analysis of collar county geographies as well as information obtained from original surveys of residents. The project is directed by Prof. Charles Cappell.

- Links at this site permit the research to download
complete census data down to the smallest geographic area, the block. See
"Downloading Census Data for Local Analysis" for a description of
the procedures to use. The N.I.U. Sociology Quantitative Research Lab has
created an animated web session
showing the procedures to follow to download census data. Any of the tables
produced from the American Factfinder site can be downloaded for independent
analysis.

- This site provides GIS files needed for map construction
using GIS software. One can download a variety of shape files, at all levels
